Welcome to Okunoshima
Located in the Inland Sea of Japan, Okunoshima is a small island famous for its hundreds of wild, friendly rabbits. While it is now a place of cute encounters and relaxation, it also holds a significant place in history as the former site of a poison gas factory.
Getting There
🚂 From Mainland (Tadanoumi)
- Train: Take JR Kure Line to Tadanoumi Station.
- Port: Walk 3 mins to Tadanoumi Port.
- Ride: Approx. 15 mins to Okunoshima.
🚗 From Omishima (Sakari Port)
- Location: Sakari Port is on the northern side of Omishima Island.
- Access: Accessible by car or bicycle from the Shimanami Kaido.
- Ride: Approx. 15 mins to Okunoshima.

⚠️ CAUTION: Check Return Times!
If you miss the last boat, there is no way off the island. There are no water taxis.
🐰 The Rabbits
The rabbits are wild but accustomed to humans. They will approach you in groups hoping for food!
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Bring Food With You!
Rabbit food is NOT sold on the island. You must buy pellets at the port or bring fresh vegetables (carrots, cabbage) from a supermarket.
Rules of Interaction
- ❌ Do not chase or hold the rabbits (they are fragile).
- ❌ Do not feed them on the roads or bike paths.
- ✅ Feed them flat-handed to avoid nips.
- ✅ Be mindful of your trash; rabbits will eat plastic.
The Dark History
During WWII, this island was erased from maps to hide a secret chemical weapons plant.
- Poison Gas Museum: A small, sobering museum detailing the production and effects of the gas.
- Ruins: Hike to see overgrown power plants, storage facilities, and batteries.
Activities & Facilities
- Cycling: Rent bikes at the Kyukamura hotel to circle the 4km island.
- Hiking: Visit the observation deck for 360° views.
- Food: The Kyukamura Ohkunoshima is the only spot for lunch.
- Note: There are NO convenience stores. Bring water!
